Through trails and tribulations in the past 6 months, I have had the challenge of being me or finding me again. In December, I was given the opportunity I have been fighting for sometime now: to work at DVF. Diane von Furstenberg stands for everything women and how to empower ourselves through self confidence and self love. As women, we always doubt ourselves and our capabilities, but I challenge that and say lets find the lioness inside ourselves and roar as loud as possible.
For the spring collection DVF has a new mantra to add to the list of powerful messages. This season #youbeyou stands out like no other for me. I want to start a movement of women encouraging each other instead of bashing at one another. You be You stands for a celebration of happiness and the power of self confidence. It is so much easier to spread love than to spread hate. This is what DVF has taught me and one of the reasons she has changed my life.
As a young child and well into my early to mid-twenties, I suffered with many things I am not so proud of, bulimia and anorexia being one of them. In the entertainment and fashion industry there is such a high standard for what it means for women to be beautiful: to be skinny. It was such a struggle for me because I was not built to be skinny, I am latina, I have curves and it was extremely difficult for me to be at the industry standard. I put my body through a lot of hardships, not eating, purging if I ate and punishing myself for giving my body what it was craving and exercising until my body world give out on me. Until one day, after fainting at a photoshoot, I said enough is enough. I was petrified that the damage I was doing to my body would effect it long-term.
That is why now I want to be the best version of me, a healthy, positive, confident me. It is quite liberating to let go of all the negatives that hold us down. Release all our insecurities and see the beauty inside ourselves. It doesn’t matter what we look like on the exterior, the best is when our interior glow shines through our pores. It is a journey of self-discovery. I am not saying it is going to be easy, but I will say it is definitely worth it. Wake up in the morning, read a positive quote, share it with the world one day. Also, you can put whatever you want to make you feel confident through out the day, whether it is a t-shirt or a dress even your favorite lipstick. Whatever make you feel like the best version of you.
I want you guys to share with me what it is that makes you feel confident and the best version of you. Maybe, what you have to say will empower another woman and that is how we get the ball rolling. I will start: As silly as it may seem, laughing and acting goofy is what makes me confident. There is a power in laughter which we take for granted. It really cures so much! And if by me acting goofy or silly makes someone else laugh then I feel more confident knowing while I’m cracking up it makes someone else feel good too. So I guess paying it forward that way makes me more confident and makes me the best version of moi!
